Jackson, US · Full-time · $145,000 – $185,000

About this role

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, delivering natural gas and electricity to 6.8 million residents across all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. The Principal Electrical Engineer serves as a departmental subject matter expert responsible for engineering and design of large complex projects supporting sustainable operation of distribution, generation, and storage systems. This role specializes in electrical utility systems and products design, layout, and implementations.

The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) West Region Primary Engineer provides project lead and workload management oversight for Capital and O&M projects ranging from complete new electric substations to single I&C device modifications. Responsibilities include matrix oversight of internal design engineering analysts and externally contracted projects producing designs within the primary engineer's purview. The position supports efforts to improve division processes and meet common objectives.

This hybrid role requires onsite presence Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at the Parnall Service Center in Jackson, MI, with candidates needing to be commutable or willing to relocate. The engineer collaborates with teams of engineers, technicians, project planners, managers, schedulers, construction coordinators, protection engineers, and operations personnel. Interfaces extend to substation and high-voltage direct current lines groups, electric field lab, and construction.

The employee utilizes the team for section workload management, identifies additional resource needs, and contributes to staff decisions shaping the division's future in technology, processes, and administration. Occasional field visits to electric substations are required to develop scopes, resolve issues, and ensure project commitments. This position reports directly to the I&C Engineering Division Lead.
