About this role
Freeport-McMoRan provides skilled trade internship opportunities for students currently enrolled in associate degree or certification programs in mechanical fields, and recent graduates in North America. These temporary, full-time paid positions usually run from May through August. Interns join a collaborative environment supported by core values that encourage safe production.
Under direct supervision, assist with maintenance activities including component removal, repair, and installation of crushers, vibratory screens, mills, pumps, and conveyor systems. Perform mechanical and lubrication preventative maintenance such as changing filters, checking screens, oil levels, and lubrication systems. Help complete work orders, work area inspections, and job safety analysis.
Interns placed at sites across Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas contribute based on organizational needs. Work occurs in mine or manufacturing plant settings with exposure to temperature extremes, moving mechanical parts, toxic chemicals, and fumes. Physical demands include standing, climbing ladders, manual dexterity, and lifting up to 50 pounds; personal protective equipment required.
Gain hands-on skills and experience in fixed plant maintenance to set path to successful future in mining. Program designed to recognize excellence amid safe production culture. Candidates not eligible for Freeport-McMoRan immigration work visa sponsorship.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an associate degree or certification program in a mechanical or relevant field, or recent graduate within 12 months prior to internship start date
- Ability to understand, apply and communicate verbal and written work and safety-related instructions, procedures, job assignments and applicable safety standards in English
- Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and meet time-sensitive deadlines
- Regularly stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear, and see
- Occasionally lift moderately heavy objects up to fifty (50) pounds
- Work in mine or manufacturing plant with exposure to temperature extremes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
- Use personal protective equipment including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves as required
- Promote drug/alcohol free work environment through mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing
Responsibilities
- Assist with maintenance activities including component removal, repair and installation of various crushers, vibratory screens, mills, pumps, conveyor systems
- Assist with and perform mechanical and lubrication preventative maintenance such as changing filters, checking screens, oil levels, and lubrication systems
- Assist with completing work orders, work area inspections, and job safety analysis
- Perform welding and fabrication
- Operate equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, and overhead cranes
- Perform housekeeping duties
- Perform other duties as required
Benefits
- Estimated pay range of $22.50/hour based on education and relevant experience
